Summer Beauty Tips for Dark Skin

Summer is almost here and I have had a few request for makeup tips for dark skin. I love to see fresh healthy skin, so this summer skip foundation and powder and opt for a light tinted moisturizer to even out your complexion instead. Benefit Cosmetics has an amazing product called Some Kind-A Gorgeous and it is a foundation faker. Check out the deep shade for medium to darker skin tones.

Face: Spread a very thin layer of tinted moisturizer all over face and blend into your neck. Make sure you pick a tinted moisturizer that has at least a  SPF 30. Or you can just apply your favorite SPF before you put on your Tinted Moisturizer. My favorite tinted moisturizer is from Stila Cosmetics. Josie Maran Cosmetics Bronzing Argan Oil is perfect for dark skin. It not only moisturizes, but it adds a bronze sheen to the skin. Use this under your tinted moisturizer for added moisture.

Cheek: I prefer cream cheek colors and Make Up For Ever has come out with 14 shades of High Definition Cream Blush. Innuendo and Mistaken Identity are beautiful shades for dark skin.

Eyes: Keep with the cream trend and skip powdered shadows. I love the Indian Wood Paint Pot from MAC Cosmetics. It is a warm bronze shade and perfect for any skin tone. Camargue and Summer Time from NARS Cosmetics is another great option. Try the waterproof liners from Make Up For Ever, they are a two-in-one pencil that is waterproof and last all day without fading. Apply two coats of very black waterproof mascara and you are good to go.

Lips: Keep your lips nice and hydrated by applying Rose Bud Salve before you go to bed. If you have dry chapped lips, try using Benfit Cosmetics LipScription to buff away dead skin and then use a lip balm. Keep the lips nude and try the Lip Enhancing Gloss in Afterglow from Smashbox Cosmetics or try the NEW Lip Stains from Josie Maran Cosmetics.

Body: Baby Oil gel is something I use a lot of, especially on photo shoots. Using this gel based Baby Oil is excellent after a shower when your body is still damp. Just rub a small amount into your wet body and massage. This seals the moisture into your skin.

Have a safe and happy summer and enjoy the sun!

Thank you so very much for these helpful tips. However my friends and I have oily combination skin types. What do you suggest for toning down the oil,if not powder? And are cream blushes an option for us(oily skin types) as well?Thank You

Hello Shawna, how are you? Usually when someone tells me they have oily skin, I say: Its better than having dry skin! If you have oily skin, skip the oil all together. Use a mild astringent on the face and then use a oil free moisturizer. DO NOT USE a astringent with alcohol in it. Removing all the oil from the surface of your skin will only end up producing more oil. Try the Benefit Some Kind-A Gorgeous which is a cream to powder foundation faker. Using a oil blotting sheet before reapplying your powder will help reduce caking. But if you ask me, there is nothing wrong with a little bit of shine!

Hello, I do not use or really have any info on lightening skin with bleaching creams. I think it would be more appropriate for a dermatologist to answer that question. However, I use the Shiseido White Lucent line of products which are great, but I do not have uneven skin. DDF, Murad and Ole Henriksen make great lightening products as well.

      Good luck! Anthony

Hey April! YES! Josie Maran Cosmetics is at Sephora and online at I recommend the eye shadows and lip pens. I also LOVE the Argan Oil Spray and Oil. The bronzer would be a perfect shade for you as well.
    Good Luck!

I have dark skin color but around the lips i have more dark color. Please tell me what i have to do for that.

    • Anthony Merante says:

Hello Ashmee, you can use a concealer like the Lift Concealer from Make Up For Ever or my other favorite, Cle De Peau concealer. Apply the concealer around the lips and then set with a translucent powder. Next, apply your lipliner and lip color. If you use a gloss, you will have to touch up often so I recommend a satin or matt lipstick. You can also use one of those long wear lipstick and gloss from MAC. I hope this helps and good luck.
